Monticello girls and boys basketball coaches step down

Four years ago, Monticello overhauled three of its key coaching positions, bringing in Rodney Redd to coach football, elevating Josh McElheny to coach girls basketball and hiring Robert Shelton to coach boys basketball.

Now with new athletic director Matthew Pearman at the helm, they’ll perform a similar overhaul as both McElheny and Shelton have stepped down from their respective spots months after football coach Jeff Woody, who replaced Redd two years ago, left for E.C. Glass in Lynchburg. Jeff Lloyd, previously of Kettle Run, has already been tapped to lead the Monticello football program.

Shelton is reportedly leaving for the opening at Louisa County recently created after former head boys basketball coach Brian Wilson stepped down, as was communicated in a team meeting Wednesday to the Monticello boys squad. Shelton is a Louisa alum who led the Lions to a state final appearance in 1994 before playing at Ohio State.

McElheny indicated via email that he is stepping down to pursue other opportunities. Hed led the Mustangs’ girls program to an 81-22 record, including a 44-4 mark in the Jefferson District. They won three straight Jefferson District regular season titles as well as a Region II championship and a state final four appearance in 2013.

“The Monticello girls basketball program has become one of the best in central Virginia and I am certain that it will continue to be because of the effort that the players put in to become the best they can be,” McElheny said. “I appreciate all the support from the players and parents during my time at MHS as well as the other coaches in the MHS community, I will miss them greatly.”

Pearman indicated that Monticello has already begun the search process to fill both positions.
