Monroe girls wrap unbeaten regular season head to region tourney

William Monroe’s girls basketball finished one job Friday night. Now they can officially move on to the next job.

The Dragons wrapped up a 21-0 regular season with a hard-fought 31-20 victory over Brentsville despite a banged up Samantha Brunelle not playing her usual role.

After injuring her ankle on Tuesday, Brunelle spent time occupying two defenders while the Dragons locked up the Tigers on defense in a 2-3 zone in the first half. Brunelle finished with nine points and let her teammates do much of the heavy lifting, with Hailey Morris scoring 12 points to bolster the effort. Iyanna Carey scored eight points while Emma Pickett rounded out the offense with two points.

Mostly, the Dragons held Brentsville in check on the defensive end, switching to man-to-man after starting in the zone. Brentsville managed just nine more points against the man-to-man and Monroe pulled away. Katie and Lacey Beale combined to hold Brentsville’s leading scorer to just three points.

That next job? The Class 4, Region B tournament. That starts Friday, the Dragons will find out their opponent soon as the region standings continue to shake out.
