Monroe baseball grabs two wins to setup BR showdown

Facing two out-of-district opponents before a pivotal home battle in the Bull Run District, William Monroe picked up a pair of wins, a 12-3 win over Culpeper and a 9-2 win over Louisa to set up its showdown with Strasburg on Tuesday.

“It was good to get back to ourselves (against Culpeper) after the way we kicked the ball around after the Albemarle game,” said Monroe coach Mike Maynard. “We got a lot of quality innings pitched from Lamar Nelson.”

The Dragons dispatched Blue Devils earlier in the week thanks a winning effort on the mound from Nelson and offense from Spencer Breeden and Jordan Gentry. Nelson threw three inning to grab the victory. Breeden went 3 for 3 with a trio of RBI. Gentry was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Gentry, the player of the year last season in the Jefferson District, threw his first inning of this season as he recovers from a shoulder injury incurred during basketball season.

Against Louisa, Monroe took the Lions to task in the second inning on a six run rally that was highlighted by a 2-run shot from Ryan Leake and a solo homerun from Logan Forloines. Leake went 2 for 4 with four RBI on the night. Gentry was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

Jack Morris threw four innings to earn the win over Louisa and piled up six strike outs. Ryan Morris threw two innings of relief and Gentry threw one of his own.

Monroe (4-1) hosts Strasburg Tuesday at home at 7 p.m.
