Madison wins thriller against East Rockingham

Things hadn’t gone exactly to plan in the kicking game for Madison County Friday night against East Rockingham, as the Mountaineers managed to connect on just one extra point on three attempts. They’d also missed two two-point conversions.

But the kicking game rose to the occasion when it absolutely had to as Eric Cashman’s field goal sailed in from 18 yards out with four seconds to play. The field goal put Madison ahead of East Rockingham for good as the Mountaineers pulled off a huge win at home 34-32 over the Eagles.

The clutch field goal was strong redemption for Cashman who’d posted the 1 for 3 performance on extra points.

East Rockingham scored to move ahead of Madison 32-31 with a 50-yard touchdown with 2:23 left. Madison then raced down field to setup the Cashman field goal.

Isiah Smith and Chris Smith were an incredible one-two punch on the ground, with Isiah Smith rushing for 189 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Chris Smith scored three touchdowns and rushed for 136 yards on 13 carries.

The Mountaineers only threw for 33 yards, pulling off the huge win leaning almost entirely on their rushing attack.

Dylan Breeden was a defensive force with three sacks and six tackles while Jake Price notched five tackles. Isiah Smith and Cashman led the way defensively with seven tackles each.

Madison (2-1) enters a bye week now. They’ll return to action September 23 at home against Warren County.
