Louisa County continued a strong winter sports campaign Monday when the Lions’ girls indoor track squad took fifth as a team and the Lions’ Nicholas Emmert won an individual state championship in the 1600-meter race in the Class 4 state championships in Lynchburg.
Louisa athletics already picked up a girls basketball state title and Owen Greslick’s individual wrestling championship this season.
Emmert ripped off a 4:24.37 to win the 1600, outpacing runner-up Joshua Bernstein of Loudoun County by more than four seconds. He knocked more than eight seconds off his time in the 2020 championships as a sophomore that put him in 10th place a year ago.
The Louisa girls took fifth as a team with Dezmajia Carter leading the way. Carter was the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 17-02.75, took fourth in the 55-meter dash and snagged fourth in the triple jump for a strong all-around performance.
Alicia Woodfolk took fifth in the shotput and Chloe Fritz finished fourth in the pole vault and ninth in the high jump. Maddox Pleasants finished 10th in the 500.
The Lions also had top 10 finishes in three relays, taking seventh in both the 4×400 and 4800 as well as ninth in the 4×200.
Arianna Colson of Orange County finished as the high jump runner-up.
The Louisa boys finished 11th as a team with Emmert’s title doing the heavy lifting. They also notched a pair of fifth place finishes from Lucas Cash in the pole vault and Lowell Johnson in the shotput while the team took ninth in the 4×200 relay.
