Haverstrom ignites Monticello boys lacrosse in win over Fluvanna

Monticello’s boys lacrosse team has found a major force in Austin Haverstrom, an all-conference and all-region punt returner for the Mustangs’ football program.

“Austin is doing me a favor by playing lacrosse,” said Monticello coach Tucker Tapscott. “He’s a football-minded guy who is going to be one of the best guys coming up and I couldn’t be any more proud of his fundamentals and how hard he works. That’s why he is where he is as a sophomore.”

Haverstrom helped spark the Mustangs to a 12-8 victory over Fluvanna County. The sophomore had five goals, an assist and 11 ground balls built largely on a dominant performance on faceoffs.

Beyond Haverstrom’s explosive effort, Andrew Vance and Mitchell Plantz each had two goals. Daniel Hummel, Alex Norris and Jackson Petro all had a goal a piece.

“We were able to get every kid on our sideline playing time tonight which is something that our program has really been trying to define ourselves with,” Tapscott said. “If you put the work in in practice you’re going to get the love in games.”

Matthew Long led Fluvanna County with three goals while Andy Guess finished with two goals.

Fluvanna will host Albemarle Tuesday while the Mustangs take on Salem tomorrow on the road.
