Haun named executive director of VHSL

Billy Haun will be the new executive director of the Virginia High School League. Haun has previously served the principal at Monticello, a former football coach, a member of the Albemarle County Public Schools central office and, most recently, the Virginia Department of Education’s chief academic officer.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to serve as Executive Director of the Virginia High School League,” said Haun in the VHSL’s press release. “I want to thank the Executive Committee for having the confidence in me to work with staff and the Executive Committee to continue providing outstanding service to Virginia’s students and the League membership. I also would like to thank Mr. Ken Tilley for his years of dedicated leadership to Virginia’s schools and students and wish him the best on his pending retirement.”

Haun has been involved in education for 36 years in varying capacities and will take over July 1. He takes over for Ken Tilley, who has worked with the VHSL for 30 years, the last 22 as the executive director.

“On behalf of the VHSL Executive Committee, I am pleased to welcome Dr. Billy Haun as its next executive director,” said Jim Stemple, chairman of the VHSL executive committee in the release. “As demonstrated through his highly successful career, Dr. Haun has a commitment to VHSL’s core mission and a capacity to strategically guide the League forward.”

Tilley also weighed in on Haun’s appointment in the release.

“Billy Haun certainly has strong credentials and qualities that fit the position well,” said VHSL Executive Director Ken Tilley.  “I believe he has a good vision for the direction the VHSL should take in the future, and he can lead the membership in building upon the League’s strengths to meet the challenges ahead.”

The VHSL indicated that the selection was made after a comprehensive national search and selection process. He’s been a coach, athletic director, teacher, assistant principal and principal during his career making him uniquely qualified to understand concerns from all levels of administration and in various geographic areas of the state. He’s also been a parent of high school athletes, so he grasps that part of the process too.

According to the release, during his tenure as principal of Monticello, Haun served as chairman of the VHSL Jefferson District, chairman of VHSL Region II, and two years (2005-06 and 2006-07) on the VHSL Executive Committee. The release also indicated that the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) assisted the VHSL with the search process.
