Goochland shakes off slow start, beats Nottoway

Goochland’s defense gave up a rare early touchdown Friday night to Nottoway, surrendering a 76-yard Tariq Smithers catch and run from Nottoway quarterback Cameron Reekes.

After that though? That unit was lights out.

The Bulldogs held Nottoway scoreless for the rest of the game en route to a 33-7 victory, moving to 4-0 on the season. Devin McCray and John King each picked passes in the win to lead the defensive effort.

The Bulldogs’ offense meanwhile got going through the air, with McCray tossing a pair of touchdown passes while going 4-for-5 for 103 yards. Cole Nuckols had 60 of those yards on two catches while Devin Schoolcraft caught a 30-yard touchdown pass and Quincy Snead hauled in a 13-yard score.

Goochland’s offense rushed for 284 yards despite a pair of turnovers, with Snead leading the way with 77 yards on six touches while Jasper Carter scored two touchdowns and picked up 62 yards on 19 carries. King chipped in 52 yards on the ground while McCray had 45 yards and Nuckols had 27 yards on the ground.

Goochland’s defense managed to step up in key spots, limiting Nottoway to just a 5-for-15 performance on third downs and one fourth down conversion while the Bulldogs went 5-for-11 on third downs but converted three of five fourth down attempts.

Goochland gets a week off before taking on Buckingham County September 29.
