Goochland football trounces Amelia to open season

Goochland’s football program has been built to win when the temperature drops in the postseason with its power ground attack and hard-nosed defense.

That came in handy with snow swirling Friday night in the Bulldogs’ spring opener.

The Bulldogs rolled 50-0 past Amelia Friday night, creating three special teams touchdowns jumpstarted by a huge performance by standout Kam Holman.

Holman scored three different ways with a 80-yard kick return, a 32-yard catch and run and a 55-yard sprint on an end around.

Holman’s kick return for a score came on the opening kickoff and Goochland didn’t come off the breakneck pace that set the tone for until late in the second half. A methodical drive set up a Tyler Black field goal early in the second quarter and then everything came apart seemingly at once for Amelia.

The Bulldogs forced a punt and Will Stratton, who blocked seven kicks back in 2019, got another one with a punt block and Haiden McCourt scooped and scored. Not long after that, C.J. Towles hit Holman for the 32-yard touchdown one play after converting a fourth and long with a screen to Connor Popielarz. The Bulldogs followed that with a perfectly-executed two minute drill that ended with a screen to Popielarz on the final play of the half that boosted the Goochland lead to 30-0.

Any hope Amelia held for a halftime reset ended as soon as Goochland got the ball as Holman ripped off his 55-yard touchdown on an end around. Dylan Myers picked off a pass after that, setting the stage for Jason Woodson to score from six yards out. Seconds later, Amelia fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Eyan Pace pounced on the fumble for a touchdown to push the lead to 50-0.

Popierlarz finished with 91 all-purpose yards while Holman had 102 yards receiving and rushing. Towles went 5-for-8 passing for 77 yards.

Goochland will look to move to 2-0 when the Bulldogs take on Albemarle Friday at 6:30 p.m.
