FUMA finishes third, Woodberry fourth at 2019 Prep League wrestling championships

With 175 points, Fork Union’s wrestling team grabbed third place in the Prep League championships, just missing out on the runner-up slot behind Norfolk Academy’s third place finish that followed St. Christopher’s winning its 18th-straight Prep League wrestling title with 297 points. Woodberry finished fourth in the tournament.

 

The Blue Devils’ 220-pound wrestler Scott Goode took home the weight class title to lead the way for Fork Union, with a pin just 35 seconds into the title match. Beyond Gooden, Christopher Carr took second place at 106, Lucas Yates took second at 113, Christian Beale grabbed the runner-up slot at 132, Shereef Alkhateeb took second at 145, John Gritsko took second at 152 and Javion Watson was the runner-up at 285.

 

Woodberry’s fourth-place finish got a big boost from weight class championships by Tank Yaghoubi at 126 pounds thanks to a second period pin and a win by Bill Clark at 285 pounds on a third period pin. Runner-up finishes for the Tigers included Sam Thomas at 120 pounds, Will Thomas at 160 and Davis Smith at 170. Rainey O’Malley took third at 113, Charlie Ferrari took third at 138, Mack Daniels was third at 152 and Sam Cochran was third at 182.

 

St. Christopher’s picked up the team title with seven individual champions with Norfolk Academy grabbing four individual titles.
