Fluvanna softball rallies late to edge Goochland

Thanks to a solid start and a sixth inning rally, the Fluvanna County softball team picked up a quality win over Goochland, 4-2.

“(Goochland) is fundamentally sound and they do every little thing about softball right all the time and very hard to beat,” said Fluvanna coach Amie McCall. “So this is a huge confidence booster.”

With the game tied up at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Flucos loaded the bases with two outs. A trio of walks and a Mindy Lawson 2-run single sent Fluvanna into the seventh where the door was quickly closed.

“I think they (the team) really just took a deep breath and settled in a little bit,” McCall said of the late offensive effort. “

The Flucos took a 2-0 lead to start with a double from Elizabeth Kidd and a sacrifice fly from Kiersten Allen in the second inning. In the third a leadoff single from Lawson was cashed in with an RBI double from Sasha Morgan.

Goochland answered in the fourth inning with a single from Brandi Tester who later scored on an RBI single from Meghan Edwards. The Flucos found themselves with the bases loaded with just one out but heads up throw to home on a grounder to Taylor Beck at third and then a grounder to pitcher Alexis Scott got Fluvanna out of the jam.

“We have no batting cage right now so we’ve done on a lot defense and they’re comfortable defensively,” McCall said. “They weren’t worried.”

In the fifth the Bulldogs tied the game with Jordan Flemming lead off with a single and being brought in on some small ball and an error.

For the Bulldogs, Tester was 3 for 4 while Edwards was 2 for 3. Pitcher Katlyn Jones struck out three batters.

On the other side, Lawson was 2 for 4 for Fluvanna while Kidd was 2 for 3. In the circle, Scott picked up the win striking out three batters.
