Fluvanna boys snag critical win over Monticello

Fluvanna County’s boys basketball team knew what was at stake — they needed a win against Monticello to keep their playoff hopes alive.

But down five going into the fourth, the Flucos appeared to be on the ropes.

Fluvanna rallied though, ripping off a 29-point fourth quarter to pick up a 69-60 victory over the Mustangs.

Kobe Edmonds finished with 28 points and seven assists to ignite the offense for the Flucos. But Isaac Rivera’s eight fourth quarter points as well as six points for Bobby Gardner in that final frame were critical. John Boy Rittenhouse had 12 points for the Flucos.

Monticello built a five-point lead in the third quarter after both teams deadlocked at 21-21 at the end of the first half. The Mustangs got 23 points from Justin McCartney and 15 from Dylan Scheel as Monticello continued its habit this year of forcing teams to work for every win.

Both the Flucos and Mustangs will participate in the Jefferson District tournament that starts Friday.
