Fluvanna boys close regular season with win over Monticello

On Friday night, the Fluvanna County boys basketball team hosted Monticello in the final regular season clash for both teams.  Just 24 hours after losing to Charlottesville and this time playing without star guard Kobe Edmonds, the Flucos regrouped and came out victorious 73-58.

“It shows that we’re resilient, we won’t let one quarter or one half completely knock us out of the game,” said Fluvanna coach Heath Bralley. “Last night we could have folded at halftime but we didn’t, and the fact that we came back today and fought as hard as we did shows that we’re a very resilient team that will fight until the end.”

With Edmonds unavailable, the Flucos needed another guard to step up to play the lead guard position, and Lance Bruce met the challenge. He helped steady the offense and put up 11 points of his own in the process. John Rittenhouse also had 12 points and hit three threes to help with the offensive effort. But the biggest impact for the Flucos offensively came from Maurice D’Alessandro.  He led the team in scoring with 31 points, hitting seven threes and going eight for eight from the foul line in the process.  The strong offensive performance helped the Flucos take a double-digit lead into the third quarter.

“It was a very important win for us, we had a really rough loss last night, but we bounced back today with a great team effort, and I’m glad we got the win heading into regionals on Monday,” said D’Alessandro.

However, the Mustangs wouldn’t go down easy. They fought hard, clawing their way back to make it a five-point game with less than two minutes to play. Dylan Scheel and Stefan Matthews had strong performances for the Mustangs, with both scoring 11 points in the game. Dyllan Thompson also had a standout performance with eight points.

In the end, the Flucos’ offense proved to be too much, icing the game at the foul line down the stretch and their defense was able to hold off any run the Mustangs could muster.

This game marked the end of the season for the Mustangs, while the Flucos will be preparing for the first round of the Region 3C tournament on Monday. The Flucos are likely on the road against Fort Defiance.
