First quarter deficit sinks Western Albemarle against Spotswood

Western Albemarle couldn’t dig itself out of a massive hole Tuesday night against Spotswood, and the Warriors fell 61-40 to the Trailblazers in the semifinals of the girls bracket in the Daily Progress/NBC29 Holiday Classic.

Western held Spotswood’s Carter Williams to just 11 points, but big buckets by freshman Bailey Williams in the third quarter — part of her 16-point effort — helped the Trailblazers hold onto a 17-point lead built in the first quarter.

Brianna Mitchell finished with 11 for Spotswood, eight of which came in the opening frame.

Western got a solid night from Ellen Shaffrey with 18 points, but the offense was hard to come by after that, with Kelsey Swanson knocking home six points and Carolyn Schneller totaling five.

Western takes on Liberty Christian Academy in the third place game today at 1 p.m.
