Fall Sports Roundup 10.12.16: Albemarle volleyball, Monticello hockey get wins

Albemarle’s volleyball team swept Orange 3-0 Tuesday night, rolling 25-9, 25-16 and 25-13 over the Hornets.

The Patriots had a strong night at the service line with Emery Hawkins leading the way with four aces while Sarah Hanssen and Madison Warlick tallied three aces each. Warlick was also strong at the net with 10 kills and Gabbi DeGennaro chipped in five kills and four blocs. Danielle LaRosa and Adalee Lynch each had two blocks. Victoria Bickley registered eight digs for the Patriots while Hanssen triggered the offense with eight assists.

Laine Harrington had four kills and 10 digs for Orange while Danielle Mawyer finished with three blocks. Samantha Ferguson and Autumn Green each had eight digs. Amina Dade chipped in three kills.

The Patriots (11-9, 7-2 in JD) host Charlottesville Thursday while Orange will travel to take on rival Louisa County the same night.

 

Monticello hockey edges out CHS

Monticello’s field hockey team has lost its fair share of close games this year, but on Tuesday the Mustangs had one tilt their way.

Monticello edged out Charlottesville 1-0 Tuesday, with Josie Mallory picking up the lone goal for the Mustangs. Late last week, a late goal from Western Albemarle handed Monticello a narrow loss.

Monticello hosts Powhatan Thursday while the Black Knights will look to bounce back against Albemarle on the road the same night.

 

Powhatan volleyball beats Western

Powhatan’s volleyball team picked up a critical Jefferson District win at home Tuesday, knocking off Western Albemarle 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 26-28 and 25-23).

The Warriors fought valiantly with a strong front line effort as Courtney Berry leading the way with 16 kills, Olivia Nichols had 13 kills and Alema Atuaia finished with 11 kills and 12 digs.

Nichols also had a block, 21 digs and two aces. Cassidy Wilson had seven kills and three blocks. Adriana Bland finished with 18 digs while Hailey McDaniel had 13. Andrea Vial finished with 44 assists.

 

Albemarle field hockey drops Orange County

 

Albemarle’s field hockey team made short work of Orange County Tuesday, scoring seven first half goals to beat the Hornets 7-0.

 

Lauren Hughlett and Kathryn Mayo led the scoring effort with two goals each, with Hughlett throwing in an assist for good measure. Kat Bianchetto also had a big night with a goal and two assists. Anna Murray and Morgan Stilley also scored goals while Sara Mutzabaugh notched an assist. The Patriots shot an incredibly high percentage against the Hornets, missing on just two shots while scoring seven goals.
