Fall Roundup 9.4.15: AHS, Western volleyball pick up road wins

Albemarle’s volleyball game is picking up steam and Wednesday night the Patriots beat a talented Massaponax team 3-1 on the road to stay on a roll, bouncing back from a tough first game loss. The Patriots fell 25-23 and then won  25-15, 25-15, 25-14 to end the match.

The Patriots managed to handle the Panthers’ Toledo-committed outside hitter Emma Swoope with an array of their own hitters led by Stephanie Lugus. Lugus ripped off 18 kills in the three games. Beyond Lugus on the attack, Ellie Benning and Alexis Duday had eight each and defensively, Emery Hawkins was strong at the net with 2.5 blocks.

Benning was rock solid as usual at setter with 41 assists as the Albemarle offense got in rhythm. Cindy Yu took the lead at the service line with 18 service points including two aces. She also had nine digs.

Duday had four aces while Sarah Hanssen chipped in a pair of aces to go with her eight digs. Lindsey Earles finished with six digs to round out the bulk of a strong team effort on the back line.

Western volleyball drops Handley on the road

Western Albemarle’s volleyball team couldn’t close it out in three but the Warriors stepped up in the fourth game Thursday against John Handley on the road, winning 3-1.

The Warriors won the first two games 25-14 and 25-15 before Handley got going in game four for a 25-22 win. Western then closed the door in the fourth 25-22 to win the match.

Kelsey Grove had a big-time two-way game with a team-high 17 kills and 26 digs. Courtney Berry also stepped on attack and defense with 11 kills and three blocks.

Erin Farina triggered the offense with 35 assists and also made a trio of blocks.

Colleen Forsman finished with seven kills and three digs. Sienna Kellum had six kills. Hannah Miles checked in with 11 digs while Elissa Simpson had seven digs on the night.

Monticello volleyball falls to Spotswood

Monticello won game one against Spotswood Thursday but from there the Blazers got going and won the next three to grab a 3-1 win and hand the Mustangs their first defeat of the young season.

Hannah Gibson finished with seven kills and three blocks for the Mustangs. Amaya Gibson had 17 digs and three aces. Allie Perez checked in with 20 assists. Moneka Lawson had a trio of blocks and Makysha Brock notched three aces.

The Mustangs (2-1) take the floor again Saturday again at Spotswood in a tournament, the Spotswood Invitational.
