Double Duty: Charlottesville boys and girls both beat Amherst, earn region bids

Charlottesville’s boys and girls basketball teams both faced elimination games Tuesday night.

Both of them are moving on.

The Black Knights’ boys picked up a 91-67 victory on the road against Amherst, upsetting the Conference 23 No.1-seed Lancers to earn a Region 4A West tournament berth.

A balanced offensive effort with five players in double figures helped the Black Knights pick up the win and get a shot at a conference title against G.W. Danville Thursday at 6 p.m. Five different players reached double figures, three of them before the half.

The Black Knights came out firing and build a 16-point lead before halftime at 45-26, with Jaylen Hudson and Immanuel Wells each accounting for 10 first half points while Sam Neale led the way with 11. In the third quarter, Khalil Vest took over, scoring 11 of his 18 points in that frame as Charlotteville pounded it inside. Patrick Ronayne also hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third as part of a 14-point performance. He had four from beyond the arc on the night.

Hudson finished with 19 points and eight assists while Neale had 16 points including three 3-pointers.

The Charlottesville girls beat Amherst too, but picked up the victory at home 69-41 with Destinee McDonald leading the way with a 29-point explosion.

The Black Knights made quick work of the Lancers, building a 25-point lead before halftime and extending it to 30 heading into the fourth quarter. Alajiah Ragland had 16 points to bolster the effort while Zanequa Thomas finished with seven.

Charlottesville’s girls will play Jefferson Forest for a Conference 23 title Thursday on the road, but they also advance to the Region 4A West tournament with the victory.
