Cross Country 2015 Conference Championship Roundup

Several conference championship cross country meets were held this week. Here’s a look at who finished where across the area.

 

Conference 16

Albemarle’s girls team rolled to a Conference 16 team title this week with five top ten finishers (and a sixth thrown in for good measure) as the Patriots’ sixth best finisher.

 

The Albemarle run started with Ryann Helmers winning the individual title with a time of 19:41.00. Her sophomore classmates Kenzie Lloyd (third), Gabriella Bock (fourth), JennWendelken (seventh) and Natalie Li (eighth) weren’t far behind as all four finished within two minutes of Helmers’ title-winning effort. Emma Weaver finished ninth and her time didn’t count for the Patriots, a major display of Albemarle’s depth.

 

Orange County also got a strong performance from junior Caroline Marquis who finished second in the individual race. The Hornets finished fifth as a team out of six squads, with Shannon Woods in 20th, Alden Carter 32nd, Taylor Carr 34th and Lauryn Eppard 37th combining with Marquis’ blistering race.

 

In the boys race, Albemarle took second behind Atlee to grab a region championship berth while Orange County finished fifth as a team.

 

Jonathan Muhler’s fourth place finish in 17:31 led the Patriots while Henry Cohen took sixth, Sean McGovern took eighth, Jack Bailey ninth and Sam Forney finished 12th. All five Albemarle runners finished within 33 seconds of each other.

 

The Hornets’ Griffin Floyd finished 25th, Bobby Lee took 27th, Ian Tiblin 30th, Luke Wilson 33rd and John Marshall Gillum 35th.

 

Conference 19

 

Louisa County boys team finished fourth in Conference 19 with King George winning the team title.

 

Justice Anderson’s eighth place finish was Louisa’s highest, with Taylor Stark (15th), Forrest Houlgrave (16th), Nathaniel Whitby (21st) and Rick Langhorne (27th) following Anderson for the Lions.

 

The Louisa girls squad finished fifth as a team with King George also winning the girls title.

 

Sophomore Katelyn Wilson took ninth overall for Louisa, freshman Sarah Seay took 13th, Julia Ward was 23rd, Isabella Findley was 24th and Hannah Emmert took 27th.

 

Conference 23

 

Charlottesville’s boys squad finished fifth in Conference 23, with Isaac Vik’s 15th place time of 18:28 setting the pace while Eliot Ferki took 23rd, Patrick O’Shea took 25th, Lukas Houpt finished 26th and Hollis Ledlow took 32nd.

 

Jefferson Forest rolled to the boys Conference 23 title.

 

The Charlottesville girls finished fourth overall with Bethany Reitsma taking 18th, Averill Angle 22nd, Lucia Alday Jover 23rd, Sharon Reitsma 26th and Sahara Clemons 27th.

 

E.C. Glass won the girls individual title.

 

Conference 29

 

Western Albemarle’s boys cross country team fended off a solid challenge by Turner Ashby to win the Conference 29 championship Thursday, edging TA by just four points on the strength of four top ten finishers.

 

The win at the Pleasant Grove course in Palmyra advances the Warriors to the Region 3A West meet.

 

Western’s Gannon Willcutts won the individual title with a time of 16:15.89. Jack Ehlenberger took second for the Warriors with a time of 17:04.11. Behind them, Max Feuerlein and Max Miller grabbed the seventh and eighth spots while Davis Greene rounded out the title-winning scoring with a 15th place.

 

Monticello finished fifth on the boys side with Aaron Vogeley setting the pace with a 20th place finish while Andrew Canterbury took 28th and Harrison Wesson finished 29th. Carryk Bhattal took 35th and Jack Kircher finished 38th.

 

Fluvanna finished just behind the Mustangs in sixth place. Senior Andy Guess finished 21st, James Byram took 30th, Jack Rice finished 32nd, Andrew Riddler was 37th and Morgan Milburn took 40th.

 

On the girls side of the Conference 29 meet, Monticello and Western’s girls engaged in a fierce duel with the Mustangs’ girls edging Western by two points to take home the conference title. The Mustangs’ win was Monticello’s first ever conference title. 

 

Both squads had three top ten finishes, but back-to-back finishes by Renee Craft and Maria Vizcaino in 12th and 13th sealed the title for the Mustangs.

 

Ahead of those two, senior Laura Habermeyer took fourth, Kate Walz finished sixth and Gena Lewis took eighth as all five Monticello runners earned All-Conference honors.

 

For Western, sophomore Zoe Clay won the individual conference title with a time of 19:31.98, beating Waynesboro’s Grace Brooks who took second. Averi Witt then took third for the Warriors while freshman Jenna Hill finished ninth and Erica Grupp took 14th. Alyssa Santoro-Adajian took 18th to cap the Warriors’ scoring.

 

Fluvanna County’s girls squad finished fourth, with sophomore tandem Kristen Cabrera and Saige Haney setting the pace with 10th and 11th place finishes just four seconds apart. Bridget Bossong, Haley Kennedy and Jackie Rodriguez took 26th, 29th and 32nd respectively to finish off the Fluvanna effort.

 

Conference 34

 

Goochland’s boys cross country team put together a strong performance In the Conference 34 Championships and rolled to a title with four top 10 finishers, outpacing second place Nottoway by 38 points.

 

Sophomore Austin Bruce led the way for the Bulldogs, winning the individual title with a time of 18:37. Adam Norman followed with a fourth place finish and Joshua Hobbs came in sixth. Beyond that, Reid Caudill took seventh and Henry Carscadden took 11th to round out the scoring.

 

On the girls’ side in Conference 34, Goochland narrowly missed a title, finishing second to champion Nottoway by just eight points. Brittni Bruce, Jill Pillow and Maddy Muniz took sixth, seventh and eighth overall individually, finishing in a strong pack. Emma Doody’s 23rd and Courtney Grady’s 25th place finishes rounded out the scoring.

 

Conference 35

 

In the Conference 35 boys meet, Madison County’s Rashawn Turner finished fourth overall to earn a spot in the region cross country meet. The Mountaineers’ Ben Dillon finished 21st overall while Zach McLearen finished 25th as a freshman, Conner McGhee took 28th and Roma Pfaff finished 29th.

 

On the girls side, Kim Dillon was the Mountaineers’ top finisher with a 16th place clocking. Kimberly Carpenter took 21st, Katelyn Ryder was 26th, Rosemarie Mullen took 27th and Ashley Sharp finished 29th to round out the Madison scoring.

 

Conference 36

 

Nelson County’s girls squad took third place in Conference 36, with Rosie Gumm setting the pace for the Governors with a fourth place finish. Allison Wulin took 10th, Victoria Lawson 12th, Mikaela Georgiou 27th and Chloe Hellerman 35th to round out the scoring for Nelson.

 

In Conference 36’s boys race, Nelson finished fifth as a team with Wilson Memorial winning the title, with Ashby Cheape taking 22nd, Ian Strong 35th, Joseph Shannon 36th, Jacob Wood 38th and Jaylen Purvis 39th.
