Covenant wrestling gets off to a strong start

It’s been a pretty good week for Covenant wrestling.

First, the Eagles picked up three wins while hosting a quad meet Thursday night against Charlottesville, Virginia Episcopal and Randolph Macon Academy.

Covenant beat Randolph Macon 53-27, VES 72-12 and Charlottesville 48-36.

Seven Covenant wrestlers went 3-0 in those matches, with Collin Castrina at 106, Justin Bryan at 113, Zach Scharf at 132 and Chauncey Hutter at 138 joining Savraj Moore at 160, Jacob Murrie at 170 and Rick Weaver at 285 with unbeaten nights.

The Eagles followed that up with a solid performance in a loaded field at at the Little Giants Classic dual tournament in Waynesboro Saturday. The Eagles went 2-3 in the team duals, beating Monticello and Waynesboro for their two wins.

Scharf and Weaver again went unbeaten, checking in with 5-0 records. A trio of Eagles went 4-1 on the day, with Murrie, Willetts and Joseph Payne at 220 picking up four wins each.

The Eagles beat Monticello 36-30 and Waynesboro 32-30. They lost to Madison only on tiebreaker criteria after tying the Mountaineers 36-36. The Eagles fell to Lancaster 42-36 and Lord Botetourt 51-21.

That performance brought the Eagles’ dual record to 5-3 on the year, with another quad meet looming at Fork Union Friday.
