Covenant and Western boys tennis scrimmage

It may just be a scrimmage, but when two of the area’s best boys tennis programs are trying to get better and trying to test themselves against a high quality opponent, it doesn’t really get treated like a run-of-the-mill scrimmage.

Covenant and Western Albemarle locked up Monday evening in a scrimmage with the Warriors prevailing 6-3. The Eagles, under the guidance of new head coach John Eberhart, took the top two matches in the singles ladder with Davidson-bound senior Matthew Rose and Bryce Boland knocking off the Warriors’ Daniel Thomas and Jack Figgins respectively. Western swept the next four singles spots though with Ben Masselli, Beau Merhige, William Marshall and Nicholas Hagspiel picking up victories to give Western a 4-2 advantage after singles.

In doubles, Thomas and Figgins combined to knock off Rose and Boland in a hard fought 10-7 matchup.
