Covenant girls soccer advances to state title match

Covenant’s girls soccer team scored early and put itself in control en route to a 2-0 victory in the VISAA D2 state semifinals. But the Eagles know they still has work to do and that they’re going to have to take things up a level if they’re going to get it done.
“I told the team after the game that it was good enough to advance, but not good enough to win tomorrow,” said Covenant coach Bryan Verbrugge.
Isabella Conklin struck first off Stella Maton’s setup in the 13th minute and a second goal followed shortly thereafter from Makalya Hargrove off a corner kick. From there the Eagles dominated possession but struggled to solve Eastern Mennonite’s central defense, with shots missing wide or just off the mark.
Teagan Murrie notched fives saves for the Eagles in net.
“I was pleased with their effort and determination on a hot day and look forward to facing Highland,” Verbrugge said.
The Eagles square off with Highland, the perrenial Division 2 state champions, at 4 p.m. in Richmond.
