Covenant football edges Blessed Sacrament for win in opener

With Rick Weaver on the shelf to start the season, there was some question as to who would handle the load at fullback for Covenant.

Donovan Jackson answered those questions Saturday evening, as the Eagles beat Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot 29-20 on the road in Covenant’s season opener.

Jackson scored a 40-yard touchdown with 6:40 to play that ended up being a difference-maker as it put Covenant up 29-14. A late touchdown by BSH followed by a failed two-point allowed Covenant to seal up the win.

Jackson finished with 201 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries while freshman quarterback Nic Sanker picked up 110 yards on 16 touches. For good measure, Jacob Smith scored a touchdown and rushed for 53 yards on just five attempts.

Covenant’s defense carried the load in the first as The Eagles held just a 7-6 lead at the break.

Covenant will try and move to 2-0 against Christchurch on the road Saturday.
