Covenant baseball run rules Norfolk Collegiate in state quarterfinal

Behind five solid innings on the mound from Sean Rutherford and lots and lots of hitting, Covenant was able to cruise to a 14-4 slaughter rule win in its VISAA Division 2 quarterfinal contest against Norfolk Collegiate.

With a 10-4 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles surged for four runs including a walkoff 2-run double from Lee Coppock.

Rutherford improved to 9-2 on the year with the victory. Offensively, Clarke Crutchfield had a big day going 2 for 4 and driving in four runs. Jesse Getchel was 2 for 3. Chris Shifflett had a home run.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Covenant, but a week of sever weather forced the game to be played at the Steward school in Richmond.

The Eagles  (21-5) advance to the final four for the second straight season. Covenant will play top seeded Atlantic Shores in Colonial Heights on Friday at 4 p.m. The Seahawks beat their quarterfinal opponent, Middleburg, 4-1.
