Conference 29 Basketball roundup: Western girls win consolation game

Western Albemarle’s girls basketball team earned a region tournament berth, but they had to fight tooth and nail to get it done.

 

Fluvanna County took the Warriors to the brink Friday night at Broadway in the Conference 29 consolation game with Western pulling out a 42-36 win over the Flucos.

 

Fluvanna County jumped out to an 8-6 advantage and led 17-15 at the break, but the Flucos couldn’t keep Western in check quite as well during the second half as the Warriors built a five-point lead going into the fourth and led 37-27 with 2:12 to play.

 

Eleri Hayden led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals while Elisabeth Coffman had 10 points and five rebounds. Annie Meenan chipped in 11 points in the win. Mady Starsia had six rebounds.

 

For Fluvanna, Chaniyah Brown finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals. Kyia Scott had eight points and five rebounds while Jemika Johnson chipped in six points.

 

Western will play in the Region 3A West tournament next week against Heritage in Lynchburg.

 

Monticello boys fall in consolation game

 

Monticello’s boys basketball team fell 62-60 to Broadway in the Conference 29 consolation game, missing out on a Region 3A West tournament berth with the loss.

 

Ukari Brooks poured in 23 points in his final game as a Mustang while sophomore Dean Lockley had 13 points for Monticello and classmate Kobi Copeland finished with 10.
