Collegiate rolls past Fork Union

FORK UNION — Maybe he just has it out for Fork Union. It certainly appears that way. This past fall Jake McGee defeated the Blue Devils both in the regular season and in the playoffs, and now on the hardwood Tuesday evening, the Collegiate senior was the bearer of bad news once again for FUMA, as the Cougars picked up a 69-55 road victory.

“I think the key was getting to the basket,” said Collegiate coach Alex Peavy. “Lately we’ve been playing so much above the perimeter it was important for us to try and get down low.”

That wasn’t a problem, as it seemed as though every single successful Cougar field goal came from within five feet of the hoop.

Collegiate was able to establish a 10-point lead by the middle of the second quarter, but the Blue Devils cut the gap to just three points at the half.

It was a 1-point game early in the third quarter, but Collegiate peeled off a 12-0 run to reestablish its double digit lead.

Fork Union struggled from the field in the second half, and was never able to get to within more than eight points.

“I think that we didn’t do a great job defensively of doing what needed to do in the first half,” said FUMA coach Matthew Donahue. “I think we reached in a little too much and were a bit out of position and left them a lot of open opportunities.”

From midway through the first quarter until the end of the game, McGee — who is known for his ability as a long range shooter — continuously took the ball at the top of the key and drove through the lane drawing fouls on a regular basis. The Virginia bound senior finished the night with a game high 33 points, and picked up 15 of those on his 20 free throw attempts.

“Jake was a 40 percent 3-point shooter for us last year, but tonight he wasn’t feeling that,” Peavy said. “Instead he was able to get three points the old fashioned way.”

There was an outstanding disparity in free throw attempts between the two squads as the Cougars went to the foul line 37 times while the Blue Devils made the trip just four times.

Three FUMA players finished with 10 or more points including Chris Bobo, Donatas Zuzevicius and Joe Branch. Bobo was the top scorer for the Blue Devils with 17 points. Zuzevicius put up 11 points and a game high 12 rebounds. Branch had 10 points and five boards.

Fork Union travels to Hargrave Military Academy on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
