Charlottesville wins second in a row

Apparently Adrian Thurston is set on making his presence felt this year, and it only took him six touches to let Goochland know he’s a forced to be reckoned with.

Charlottesville’s top target in the passing game hauled in 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns on six catches as the Black Knights handed Goochland a 23-6 loss and a rude welcome to the Jefferson District.

Chris Grant led the Black Knights’ defense with 11 tackles, spearheading a unit that allowed Goochland just 136 yards of total offense. Charlottesville held Goochland’s fleet of tailbacks in check, limiting David McKenna to 42 yards, Dustin Plummer to 39 yards and Willie Ezell to 35 yards.

And for the second straight week Benj Wilhelm looked like anything but a freshman. The first year quarterback completed six of his eight passes and was responsible for the two Thurston scores. Maurice Jackson was also highly effective when splitting time with Wilhelm. The Charlottesville senior hit on four of his five passes including a 15-yard touchdown to Philip Wilson.

Goochland wasn’t able to get on the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter. BJ Clark scored the lone touchdown. The Bulldogs had been one of the best rushing teams in Central Virginia, but struggled to find the kind of efficiency they had in the three previous weeks. Goochland ran the ball 42 times but only averaged 3.2 yards per attempt to finish with 134 yards. David McKenna was the leading rusher with 42 yards on 10 carries.

Charlottesville (2-2, 1-0) hosts William Monroe on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Goochland (3-1, 0-1) travels to Orange on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
