Charlottesville girls fall to Western, still win regular season district title

Less than 24 hours after engaging in a double overtime clash with Covenant, Charlottesville’s girls basketball team took the floor against Western Albemarle.

The Black Knights fell 42-39 to Western Albemarle, but had already clinched the outright Jefferson District regular season title because of Albemarle’s loss to Monticello just before Charlottesville took the floor against the Warriors.

Eleri Hayden led Western with 15 points and nine rebounds in the win while Elisabeth Coffman finished with 12 points and three assists. Shannon Moore was dominant on the boards for the Warriors with 11 rebounds. Mady Starsia chipped in four rebounds.

Destinee McDonald led the Black Knights with 14 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter as Charlottesville tried to rally from down 10 points, but Western went 5-for-9 at the line in the fourth to hold on to the victory.

Zanequa Thomas finished with 12 points, all from the field. Charlottesville’s free throw struggles made things tough for the Black Knights as they went just 9-for-24 at the line.

Both Western Albemarle and Charlottesville will compete in next week’s Jefferson District tournament before moving on to conference tournament play.
