Charlottesville athletic director Larry Mangino steps down

Larry Mangino stepped down last week from the Charlottesville High School Athletics and Activities Director job after three years in the position Charlottesville principal Eric Irizarry confirmed Thursday.

“Larry did a great job, and we’ll look to see how we can add another player that complements our administrative team,” Irizarry said. “He’s helped maintain and build the program and some of the things he’s done we’re just now seeing the benefits of.”

Charlottesville City Schools have already posted the job on the school website as the search to fill the position is underway.

“It’s a critical position and a critical time of year,” Irizarry said. “We have some personnel in place that can handle that function for the time being but the ultimate goal would be to find a person in the next few weeks as quickly as possible.”

One source said that Mangino is moving on to a position at UVa. He took over as the Charlottesville athletics director after the departure of Robert Harris, who spent one year as the CHS AD in the wake of Rick Lilly’s departure to become the Activities Director at John Handley in Winchester. Mangino came largely from a college and NBA basketball coaching background, while also spending time at VMI in administration before coming to Charlottesville.

Mangino has overseen a major redevelopment of the baseball field during his time there, thanks in large part to a partnership with the Charlottesville TomSox of the Valley League who have revamped the Black Knights’ home field. During his tenure, the Black Knights’ field hockey team made runs to the state tournament and the golf team also placed in the state tournament in 2014.
