Buckingham softball overcomes 14 strikeouts from Nelson’s Taylor to win

Buckingham County softball picked up a hard fought road victory Monday evening, knocking off Nelson County 7-3.

Buckingham built a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth and then withstood the Governors cutting into the deficit with two runs in the bottom half. Buckingham tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh to ensure a big road win and overcome Nelson junior pitcher Ambyre Taylor’s 14-strikeout performance in the circle that got upended in part by three errors.

The heart of the lineup did the damage for the Knights as all the squads’ hits came from the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 hitters. Eliza Ragland led the Knights’ offense with two RBI, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a double while catcher Liberty Johnson also connected on a double, scored twice and knocked in a run. Kyra Johnson had the Knights’ other RBI and Cadence Campbell scored three different times.

Kyra Johnson and Aliyah Amos combined for the win in the circle, with Amos striking out four in the final three innings and Johnson striking out three in four innings.

Nelson County shortstop and leadoff batter Rachel Thompson hit a triple and drew two walks while knocking in a run in the loss. Chandler Giles, a sophomore catcher, also knocked in a run.

The Governors will look to bounce back against Buffalo Gap Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. while the Knights will try and continue building momentum Thursday on the road against Prince Edward.
