Big fourth quarter vaults Blue Ridge past RMA

Blue Ridge’s two-headed rushing attack struck again Saturday as Jamison Harrison and Justin Armwood each rushed for more than 100 yards and piled up five touchdowns between them.

The performance was good enough to vault the Barons to a 59-21 victory over Randolph Macon Academy and a likely spot in the VISAA Division II playoffs.

The Barons led RMA 28-7 at the break, but the Jackets refused to go away, reeling off a pair off a pair of third quarter scores to cut the lead to just a touchdown heading into the fourth quarter.

As they did a few weeks ago against Nansemond Suffolk though, the Barons exploded in the fourth quarter, pouring on 31 points to pull away from RMA.

Harrison scored both of his touchdowns in that final frame, sprinting in from 14 and 31 yards out to help Blue Ridge close the door. He finished with 154 yards and two touchdowns on 15 touches. Armwood notched 103 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.

Tariq Gough also chipped in on the ground game with 35 yards and a score on five carries.

In the passing game, Harrison tacked on another 53 yards, with Armwood and Xavier Kane combining for 175 yards. Armwood went 8-for-14 for 146 yards while Xane completed one ball for a 29-yard touchdown to Cameron Carr.

Blue Ridge finished just shy of 500 yards of offense with 483 on the day.

The Blue Ridge defense also had a strong day with four interceptions that gave the Barons a huge advantage because they didn’t cough the ball up or throw a single pick. Carr, Kane, Josh Colon and Nazir Hopson all four had one interception each. Colon also caught a touchdown pass from Armwood.

Blue Ridge closes out the regular season against Trinity Episcopal next week on the road Saturday at 1 p.m.
