Behind explosive offense, Madison football takes down King William

It was pretty clear that Madison County had a serious set of playmakers going into the 2016 season, but they wasted little time in proving just how potent they could be in the season opener. The Mountaineers reeled off 33 first quarter points en route to a 62-30 win.

Madison quarterback Chris Smith completed 13 of his 23 attempts for 371 yards and five touchdowns including some monster plays. He hit Dre Twyman for touchdowns from 32, 40 and 60 yards out. He also found tight end Dylan Breeden for a 76-yard catch and run touchdown. Twyman finished with 180 receiving yards on just four catches including that trio of scoring grabs.

Isiah Smith’s 217 yards and two touchdowns on 14 touches led the rushing attack, with the touchdowns coming from 65 and 75 yards out. That was good for 15.5 yards per carry for the senior. Smith threw in 39 yards and 10 tackles on defense for good measure.

Isaiah Breckenridge had the Mountaineers first touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Chris Smith. He also had seven tackles and a sack.

Madison started fast, then the heat and cramps slowed the Mountaineers down after that, allowing King William to claw back within striking distance at 41-30 Madison at halftime. Madison’s defense promptly shut the door in the second half though with a shutout effort after the break. Jake Price led Madison with 16 tackles on the night.

Madison moves to 1-0 on the year and will take on Luray in the squad’s home opener Friday.
