Basketball Roundup 12.14.16: Goochland boys, Western boys pick up wins

Goochland’s boys basketball built a six-point first quarter lead and then held on from there, edging Buckingham 54-51 on the road for a key James River District victory.

 

Goochland picked up the win with a balanced offensive effort. Deion Harwood led the Bulldogs with 14 points in the win, with Josh Chandler chipping in 12. Jack Twombly had 11 on the night and Keiston Carter helped close the door on the Knights with 10 points, eight of which came in the second half.

 

Buckingham’s Antonio Chambers had 15 points to lead all scorers, but the Bulldogs made him work for it, holding him scoreless beyond the arc where he’s done some damage early this season. Freshman Taylor Kelly picked up 14 points for Buckingham, but Goochland clamped down on the rest of the roster holding everyone else to six points or less.

 

Chambers also had three steals and three assists.

 

Albemarle boys blow past Fluvanna County

 

Albemarle’s boys basketball team beat Fluvanna County Tuesday night, rolling 90-29 over the Flucos.

 

Austin Katstra led the Patriots with 24 points and eight rebounds while Na’il Arnold got into a groove and poured in 20 points. Senior Jake Hahn put in another rock solid effort with 10 points and five rebounds for the Patriots. All 13 players on the team scored in the win for Albemarle.

 

Western Albemarle boys drop Orange County

 

Western Albemarle picked up a solid road win Tuesday, beating Orange County 71-41.

 

A few days after struggling behind the 3-point line against Albemarle, the Warriors got things clicking again from outside. Ryan Ingram had 16 points including four 3-pointers while Chris McGahren scored 11 points including three 3-pointers.

 

Western’s Austin Cress scored 12 points and hauled in five rebounds.

 

Chris Dickerson led Orange with 19 points while Kaeshawn Braxton had seven points and Zachary Williby scored six points.

 

Western girls beat Orange

 

Western Albemarle’s girls basketball team got back on track with a win over Orange County Tuesday, beating the Hornets 42-26 at home.

 

Elizabeth Coffman led Western with 12 points and four assists Orange tonight while Eleri Hayden scored seven points and  dominated on the glass with 10 rebounds while snagging three steals. Deja Newton-Grant had six rebounds.

 

Diamond Towles scored eight points to lead the Hornets while Erin Ryder had seven points.

 

William Monroe girls beat Warren

 

William Monroe girls basketball dropped Warren County 43-30.

 

Dajour Strother poured in 15 points to lead the Dragons while Sam Brunelle notched 14 points and eight rebounds. Lindsay Knights chipped in six points and three assists.

 

Madison County boys drop East Rockingham

 

Madison County’s boys basketball team pulled away from East Rockingham Tuesday in the second half, winning 76-65 to pick up a solid win.

 

Gaines Swink led the Mountaineers with 19 points while Isiah Smith finished with 16 and Elijah Lewis had 14. Dre Twyman also got in on the attack with 11 points.

 

Other Scores

 

Nelson County’s girls basketball team beat Altavista 46-25. Kalin McGarry and Delaney Stone with six points each while Stone had seven boards.
