Basketball Roundup 11.28.17: Monticello boys and girls, Nelson boys pick up wins

Monticello’s boys basketball team edged Cumberland 65-64 Tuesday night in the Mustangs’ season opener. Thad Lane scored 17 points to lead the Mustangs while Ben Drake came off the bench to score 11.

Monticello heads to Turner Ashby to play Amherst in the Knights’ tip-off tournament Friday at 6 p.m.

 

Nelson boys drop Buffalo Gap

Nelson County’s boys basketball team used a big third quarter surge to beat Buffalo Gap 63-51 Tuesday.

The Governors outscored the Bison 17-8 in that third quarter to put Buffalo Gap in a sizeable hole. Jacob Saunders led the Governors’ attack with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Brice Wilson scored 13 and had four steals and three assists. Devante Rose and Damien Jacques each had five rebounds and Patrick Saudners had six points.

 

Monticello girls cruise

Monticello’s girls basketball team opened up interim coach Juwuhn Smith’s tenure with an easy win over Cumberland Tuesday, rolling 56-17.

Hannah Shifflett led the way with a double double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 11 boards to go with five steals and three blocks.

Tianna Kinlaw had 11 points, six steals and four rebounds while Camille Blaine was just shy of her own double double with eight points and nine rebounds. Sariyah Hughes had nine points, three assists and three steals.
