Basketball Roundup 1.31.17: Orange wins, Covenant’s Maupin reaches 2K

With help from a big first half, Orange County’s girls basketball team picked up a win at home Monday to start a busy week for the Hornets.

Orange knocked off Madison County 48-27, building a 29-15 lead in the first half thanks in part to a combined four 3-pointers from Morgan Haney and Laine Harrington.

Orange held Madison to just six points in three of four quarters and held the Mountaineers to single digits in all four frames.

Harrington and Haney each finished with 12 points while Erin Ryder, Sincere Cook and Diamond Towles had seven a piece.

Abi Tanner had nine for the Mountaineers while Makayla Taylor had seven.

Covenant girls blow past Steward

Covenant girls basketball’s Emily Maupin crossed the 1,000 career point mark early in her junior year. Two weeks ago, she became the all-time leading scorer for Covenant and then Tuesday she cruised right to 2,000 points as the Eagles rolled past Steward 64-7.

Maupin scored 30 points to reach the new plateau and was honored shortly after that with a pause in the action and a presentation. She scored all but two of those points from the field.

Sara Meakem finished with 14 for the Eagles while Ella Dalton had 12.
