Baseball roundup 3.21.17: CHS, Orange, Fluvanna, Covenant baseball pick up wins

Orange County’s baseball team is picking up steam, snagging its third straight win to start the season Tuesday night in a 5-2 victory over Spotsylvania.

 

Much like last season, with Bradley Hanner on the mound the Hornets got a major boost as he struck out 13 and allowed just two hits, three walks and a pair of runs, one of them earned.

 

Hanner and Christian Amos each went 2-for-3 at the plate,  with Amos knocking in three runs while ripping a pair of doubles. Joel Wright also had an RBI and he and John Dawson each hit triples.

 

Fluvanna baseball drops Spotswood

Fluvanna’s baseball team picked up a huge road win Tuesday night, beating Spotswood 4-2.

Nathan Gentry led the way on the mound with three innings of work as the starter and surrendered just one run, leaving the game with the Flucos up 3-1.

After Spotswood closed the gap with a run in the fourth, Fluvanna snagged another run in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead that held up. Logan Gibson had an RBI double, Cameron Shields had an RBI single and Kyle Algeri picked up his first career save on the mound.

 

Covenant baseball drops Woodberry

Covenant’s baseball team picked up its 10th win of the season, beating Woodberry Forest 11-5.

 

Tyler Mahone picked up the win on the mound while Trent Miller had the save for the Eagles. Luke Burton finished with four hits while Will Moore had three hits against the Tigers.

 

The game was deadlocked at 5-5 heading into the seventh when Covenant exploded for six runs in the top of the frame to take control and pick up a solid road victory.

 

Charlottesville baseball shuts out James Monroe

Charlottesville’s baseball team picked up an important early season win Tuesday, beating James Monroe 5-0.

 

The Black Knights’ Dalton Richardson and Evan Baumgardner combined for a two-hit shutout with Richardson going four innings while Baumgardner closed the door in three innings of work.

 

Marcus Targonski and Caleb Davis each had a pair of hits while Drew Drumheller ripped a bases-clearing, three-run double.

 

Other Scores

STAB baseball beat Hargrave 4-1 with Nic Kent going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBI.

Madison beat Luray 6-3, moving to 2-1 on the year. Eli Estes threw a complete game and went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI.
