Ayers’ big night lifts Monticello past Fluvanna

Monticello’s offense needed to find a rhythm and its defense needed to get in gear this week.

Mission accomplished on both sides as the Mustangs beat Fluvanna County 35-14 with a renewed running game leading the way on short rest after Monticello played Charlottesville Monday night.

Jerrick Ayers rushed for 198 yards and four touchdowns, highlighted by a 79-yard scoring sprint early in the second quarter. By halftime, Monticello was up 28-6 and cruising. Kevin JArrell finished with 44 yards and a score on the ground while throwing for 39 more yards.

The Mustangs’ defense didn’t give up a touchdown until the fourth quarter and held Fluvanna to less than 100 yards on the ground on the night.

Jordan Melton did manage 104 yards through the air at quarterback for the Flucos, throwing a touchdown pass to Dylan Walker in the final quarter. Joey Van Dyke had three catches for 63 yards on the night.

The Mustangs will travel to take on Orange County next week while Fluvanna heads to Albemarle.
