Albemarle wins VHSL sportsmanship award

At the VHSL Group 5A semifinals on Tuesday, Albemarle’s crowd was loud and just flat out impressive even with the Patriots’ boys basketball team playing in the brunch time slot at the Siegel Center with a 10 a.m. tipoff.

That effort, along with the actions of the team and school officials came together to impress the VHSL tournament staff and that group elected Albemarle the winner of the Marshall Johnson Sportsmanship Award. The award is given to the school that exhibits good sportsmanship through the state tournament.

“We are extremely proud of the boys’ (team’s) history making season, but we are just as porud that Albemarle received the VHSL Sportsmanship Award,” said Albemarle athletic director Deb Tyson in an email to the school staffers and parents. “This award is a great honor that took a collective effort form all Patriots.”

Tyson went on to thank the student section specifically.

“Thank you for your positive spirit and congratulations to all Patriots,” Tyson wrote.
