Albemarle volleyball sweeps Western

Western Albemarle didn’t make it easy on archrival Albemarle in game three, but the Patriots’ volleyball team pulled out of Crozet Friday night with a 3-0 win and the squad’s perfect record in Jefferson District play in tact.

Albemarle jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-18 and 25-15 wins in game two, with Sarah Woods’ solo block proving the turning point in game one when Albemarle took a 13-12 lead. Lexi Brown then helped close out the game two win with some timely kills.

Game three was far from an easy battle for Albemarle as they relinquished a 23-18 lead with a Western run to knot it up at 24-24. Brown stepped up again at that point with a kill before combining with Chelsea Woodfolk for a block to finish off the game and the match.

Hannah Deal and Sarah Woods led the way up front with 10 and nine kills respectively. Defensively, Taylor Bauman, Woodfolk and Michaela Malbouef all had double digit digs while combining for 36 together. Brown finished with four blocks while Woodfolk registed two of her own. Ellie Benning finished with 33 assists for the Patriots to ignite the offense.

Western struggled throughout the night, but Kelsey Grove’s eight kills and 10 digs and Ali Sandridge’s seven kills and 10 digs led the way. Maggie Spindel had seven kills as well while Christina Blount anchored the defense with 15 digs.
