Albemarle volleyball sweeps Fluvanna, maintains unbeaten mark in JD

Albemarle volleyball came into Fluvanna with a chance to keep their unbeaten Jefferson District record alive.  They left doing just that in impressive fashion, surging to a sweep of the Flucos, powered by some key runs through the match.

It began with a highly competitive first set, where neither team could figure out a way to take control.  The Flucos found themselves with a late 20-19 lead, but the first big Patriot run of the night came in that moment.  Albemarle put together six straight points to take the first set 25-20.

“The first set we were trying to get our act together defensively, and Fluvanna played really well, but we were able to get it done and close out that first set,” said Albemarle coach Mark Ragland.

That run and the others that followed came with winners too rather than ending on errors. Adalee Lynch led the attack with a whopping  17 kills in just three games while Maya Winterhoff notched 11 and Annabelle Townsend finished with 5 kills.

In the second set that started similarly to the first, the Flucos led early 5-4. Then the biggest Patriot run of the night kicked off, a 13-point sprint that gave them total control of the game.

“Coming into the second set two of the biggest things we focused on were our defense and serve-receive, when that’s not there we usually don’t play as well as we can, and we also needed to keep our energy up, when we have that energy we play a lot better as a team,” said Patriots outside hitter Adalee Lynch.

Those focus areas certainly showed throughout their big run, which was enough for Albemarle to surge through the second set, taking it by a score of 25-11.  The momentum gained from that second set would also carry over to the third.

In the third set, the Patriots got in front early, and never looked back, and only growing their lead throughout.  They would eventually close out the set 25-11, taking the match.

The sweep kept Albemarle’s unbeaten district record from falling, but they know that they still have some tough competition ahead in the regular season and beyond.

“I’m excited for the postseason, and we’re hoping to use these games to keep our energy up and keep improving,” Lynch said.

The Patriots travel to Spotswood Monday while Fluvanna looks to bounce back against Louisa at home Thursday.
