Albemarle Post 74 wins Southeast Region opener

Making its second straight appearance in the American Legion Southeast Region Tournament held in Asheboro, NC, Albemarle Post 74 took down Asheboro, 6-3 thanks to a furious 3-run rally and clutch save in the ninth inning to claim a 6-3 win in the first round.

Western Albemarle graduate Jack Maynard threw 133 pitches and 82 for strikes to pick up the win, giving up just one earned run, striking out five and pitching eight and one-third innings. With his team up 6-3, William Monroe graduate Austin Batten came on to pick up the last two outs in the game and earned the save in relief with just eight pitches thrown.

Albemarle took a 2-1 lead in the third on a 2-run single from Batten, then made it 3-1 in the sixth thanks to a Keegan Woolford sacrifice fly. Up 3-2 heading into the ninth, Post 74 got three runs on two hits thanks to a Dylan Shifflett RBI fielder’s choice. Monticello’s Jack Decker then drove a run on a similar play. Then Western’s Eli Sumpter delivered an RBI single to make it 6-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth where Maynard and Batten closed the door.

Batten was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI and also drew a walk. Albemarle graduate Kyle Vidano went 2 for 5 with a run scored. Sumpter went 3 for 5 with an RBI. Decker was 1 for 3 with a pair of walks. Woolford was 0 for 1, but scored two runs, drove in another and drew a walk. 

Post 74 will play Shelby (NC) which beat the Georgia state champ from Covington this evening at 8 p.m. in Asheboro. It is a double elimination formatted tournament. Albemarle sits at 25-0 on the year.
