Albemarle County budget cuts to impact scholastic sports

After meeting with the school board on Wednesday, Albemarle Superindendent Pamela Moran detailed the County’s budget proposal for 2010-2011, which was slashed by $5.3 million compared to last year.

Headlining the effects of the cuts are larger class sizes and the elimation of 20 jobs, but the new budget, if adopted, would also having a direct effect on high school athletic departments.

Students at both Western Albemarle and Monticello would no longer be able to participate on freshman basketball teams as the programs have been nixed. In addition, assistant coaches on the junior varisty level would be eliminated at all three county high schools (Albemarle, Western Albemarle and Monticello).

Students at both the junior varsity and varsity levels could also have to pay a $75 activity fee for all sports, and a cap of $425 has been set for families with multiple participants throughout the year.

Editor’s Note — According to Albemarle Athletic Director Deb Tyson, while the assistant coaching positions at the JV level will be technically eliminated, volunteers will be allowed to assist the head coach.
