Albemarle boys swimming wins Conference 16 title, girls take second

Clearly Hogan Harper and Jack Robbins were ready to take care of business.

Albemarle’s boys swim team won the Conference 16 title Friday night thanks in large part to a pair of big-time performances from Harper and Robbins.

Harper won the 100 breaststroke, an event the Patriots went 1-2-3 in with Nick Ashby and Ishprect Singh finishing second and third for AHS. Harper also won the 50-free and swam legs on the title winning 200-medley relay and 400-freestyle relay teams for the Patriots.

Robbins won the 100-freestyle and 200 IM while also swimming legs on the same 400-free and 200-medley teams Harper helped boost to event titles.

Caleb Smith took second in the 500-freestyle for Albemarle, finishing just seven tenths of a second behind Patrick Henry’s champion Trey Lowe. He also nabbed a runner-up spot behind Lowe in the 200-free. Joe Keller finished fourth in the 200-free and 500-free.

Ashby took third in the 200 IM for Albemarle.

Orange County’s boys squad finished sixth in the event, taking sixth in both the 200 medley relay and 200-freestyle relay.

Albemarle girls take second

Albemarle’s girls swim team nearly pulled off a Conference 16 title of their own, but lost by 23 points to Patrick Henry-Roanoke in part because Patrick Henry and Atlee kept Albemarle off the board with regards to individual event champions.

Patrick Henry swept the relays and had double event winners in Caroline Kulp (200-free and 500-free) and Cabell Whitlow (200 IM and 100-fly). Albemarle’s depth couldn’t overcome those strong performances, though Maggie Woods managed a second place in the 100-back and a third in the 100-fly despite the stiff competition. In the 100-free, Albemarle took third, fourth, fifth and sixth, with Ashley Huang, Rachel Wang, Grace Farmar and Megan Jones accounting for the pack-like finish. Patrick Henry offset that depth though in that event by taking first and second with Whittney Hamilton and Natalie Kulp snagging those spots.

Maren Weathersby took third in the 100-backstroke and sixth in the 100-fly to score points for Albemarle.

Albemarle’s relay teams finished second in all three events behind Patrick Henry.

Orange County’s Alex Neilan finished second in the 100-fly and third in the 200 IM, helping boost the Hornets to a fourth place finish overall.
