Ahead of Schedule: Young Covenant girls squad lifts Eagles into state semis

Covenant’s young girls basketball team’s bright future has been talked about by anyone who has had a chance to see the Eagles play.

Maybe that future is now.

The No. 6-seeded Eagles went on the road Friday night in the VISAA D2 state quarterfinals and upset Nansemond Suffolk Academy 39-32, advancing to the state final four for the first time in at least 15 years.

Covenant won the low scoring, defensive battle with just four players notching points as Kerrigan Poindexter finished with a team-high 14 points, Delaney Poindexter managed 11, Makayla Hargrove notched eight and Reese Dalton chipped in six.

The Eagles, playing on short rest after beating Isle of Wight Tuesday in the first round, started off hot against Nansemond Suffolk, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and tacking on another 13 in the second quarter. The offense slowed down from there though, with just 12 second half points. Instead, the defense did the heavy lifting, limiting NSA as Covenant held on for the seven-point win.

The Eagles now face the No. 2-seeded Steward School Friday at 8:45 p.m. at Benedictine in Richmond in the state final four.
