FORK UNION — Woodberry Forest outdistanced Fork Union to capture the title at the annual Gus Lacy Track Classic on a beautiful Saturday at Fork Union.

The Tigers garnered 100.5 points to slip past the Blue Devils, who tallied 95 points in the meet that honored 2007 graduate Axel Mostrag. Mostrag, a native of Poland, captured a national championship in the 800 meters (indoor) during his two-year stint at the school and was an eight-time state champion.

Michael Davenport helped pace Woodberry, taking top honors in the 200 and finishing second in the 100 behind FUMA’s Drake Davis, who won in a time of 10.84. Davenport, a junior, was also second in the long jump and was a part of the 4×100 relay team that took second behind Fork Union.

The relay teams were one of many highlights for the Blue Devils as the 4×100 team of Davis, O’Neil Combs, Adisa Gittens-Smith and Rashaad Bruce captured first in a time of 42.45. FUMA’s 4×400 relay team set a new meet record with the quartet of Davis, Dante Price, Alex Lomong and Peter Lomong. The Blue Devils finished ahead of Lee-Davis in a time of 3.20, breaking the old record set by Deep Creek in 2002.

Jack Claiborne won multiple events for Woodberry, taking the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles (40.96) as well as the high jump (6-2). Claiborne’s teammate, Nathaniel Tyrell, finished second in the 300-meter hurdles.

The Tigers continued to excel in the field events, as Brady Logan won the shot put and finished third in the discus. Teammate Clark Yarbrough was fifth in the shot and discus while David Yoo cleared 14-0 to finish second in the pole vault.

Fork Union had plenty of solid performances as well. Alex Lomong won the 800 in a time of 1:51.72, while brother Peter finished third in the event. Combs took first place in the long jump and Bruce finished first in the triple jump. Davis, a junior, had a busy day, finishing third in the high jump in addition to his win in the 100 and part on two winning relays.

Other notable highlights included Western Albemarle’s Gannon Willcutts, who won the 3200 meter run, helping the Warriors to a sixth-place finish overall. Teammate Trevor Stutzman was third in the event. Louisa County’s 4×800 relay team of Josh Bishop, Garrett Wood, Nathaniel Whitby and Justice Anderson won in a time of 8:15.80.

Norfolk Academy collected 94 points to win the title on the girls side, while St. Catherine’s finished second (85). Fluvanna County was fifth overall and Louisa County finished seventh.

Charlottesville’s Taylor Watkins was a bright spot for the local competitors, winning three events (100, 200, 400) on the day. The senior standout garnered all 30 points for the eighth-place Black Knights.

Other highlights included Louisa’s Aaliyah Clark, who won the long jump (15-11) and helped the Lions to a third-place finish in the 4×100 relay. LCHS also took third in the 4×400 relay, while Fluvanna was third in the 4×800 relay behind Mountain View and St. Catherine’s.
