2014 Wells Fargo Cup standings announced

The VHSL announced the final 2013-2014 Wells Fargo Cup standings today for athletics and several local schools fared well in the all-sports race coordinated by the VHSL.

Albemarle finished eighth in the Group 5A race, getting a big spring lift from the boys lacrosse squad’s state championship and a run to the state final by the boys soccer squad. The girls swim team’s state championship in winter was also critical in the effort. Hickory High won the Group 5A Cup.

Western Albemarle finished tied for second in the Group 3A Cup race behind No. 1 Blacksburg with 480 points to the Bruins 510. Western was tied with Williamsburg-area school Lafayette for second.

Those three schools well outpaced the field as the fourth place school, Hidden Valley, finished with 322.5 points, nearly 160 points back.

The Warriors closed strong with a pair of state titles in spring in boys soccer and girls tennis as well as state tournament appearances by both girls and boys lacrosse.

William Monroe checked in at 29th in Group 3A on the strength of the Dragons’ golf state runner-up finish while Monticello didn’t crack the top 40.

In Group 4A, Charlottesville finished 37th with 25 points out of winter while Fluvanna had 15 points and finished 42nd.

Madison County finished 14th in Group 2A with 122.5 points. With 87.5 coming in spring boosted by the state semifinal run by the baseball squad.

Also in Group 2A, Goochland finished 37th, Buckingham took 32nd and Nelson took 34th. Orange County took 39th in Group 5A with the state tournament appearance in field hockey doing the heavy lifting.
